Thompson (ASN: 1204944), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mount Kemmel, Belgium, 31 August 1918. When the two platoons commanded by him met, with heavy machine-gun fire, Sergeant Thompson placed his men under cover, and single-handed went forward to reconnoiter his objective in the face of heavy shell and machine-gun fire.
