The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charles Maxwell Tarter (ASN: 51354), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Vaux, France, on 1 July 1918. When his captain was wounded, Sergeant Tarter went out under violent machine-gun fire to bring the officer to shelter and was severely wounded himself while performing this heroic act.
