The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Bernard Stone (ASN: 1451493), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 138th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Cheppy, France, 26 September 1918. In the face of machine-gun fire Private Stone entered an enemy dugout alone, killed one German and captured six prisoners and two machine guns. Though he was twice wounded he remained on duty until the last day of the drive. After his wound was dressed, he left the hospital to join his company.
