    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Kirby Pelot Stewart, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 328th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chatel-Chehery, France, 8 October 1918. Leading his platoon in an attack through an open valley, which was swept by enemy machine-gun fire from both flanks, Second Lieutenant Stewart displayed marked heroism in continuing in command of his men after being himself severely wounded, inspiring them by his courage till he fell mortally wounded by a second machine-gun bullet.
