By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Clayton Evans Snyder, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 9th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, throughout the Argonne-Meuse Campaign Lieutenant Snyder demonstrated his bravery, coolness and ability to command. It was only through Lieutenant Snyder’s efforts that the enemy’s machine guns were located near Romagne, France. Lieutenant Snyder constantly exposed himself to heavy machine gun fire in order to locate the enemy machine guns. During this work, which called for the utmost courage, Lieutenant Snyder was wounded but refused to be evacuated until all the machine guns flanking our line were silenced.
