    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward H. Smallyon (ASN: 362648), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. Given a message to send by buzzer, Private Smallyon found that all his wires had been destroyed. He immediately started through the bombardment and safely delivered the message, although nearly surrounded by the enemy.
