The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Mechanic John Benjamin Shingle (ASN: 1249376), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismes, France, 6 August 1918. Prior to the attack of his battalion, Mechanic Shingle exposed himself to heavy enemy fire while making a reconnaissance of the Vesle River, which was some 300 yards in advance of the line held by his company. He later guided his company to a suitable position from which a crossing was made without delay and without many casualties.
