    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Joseph Scialabba (ASN: 2338403), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois de Foret northeast of Cunel on 13 October 1918, Private Scialabba, while in an expose outpost position, in the face of a strong counterattack, used a captured machine gun, mowing down the attacking enemy. When the machine gun jammed, he picked up a light Browning, using it with the same effect, until his magazines were exhausted, when he used his Springfield rifle. Until he was killed two days later, he displayed extreme aggressiveness in the advance and always volunteered for patrols. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Joseph Scialabba (ASN: 2338403), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cunel, France, 13 October 1918. From an exposed outpost position, during a strong enemy counterattack, Private Scialabba opened fire on the advancing enemy with a captured machine-gun. When the machine-gun jammed, he picked up a light Browning gun and used it with the same deadly effect until the magazines were exhausted, whereupon he resorted to rifle fire. This gallant soldier was killed in action two days later.
