Kenneth Preston began service on June 30, 1975, and later served in Operation DESERT STORM and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Serving as Sergeant Major of the Army from 2004 to 2011, he held that post for more than six years, longer than any other Sergeant Major of the Army.
