Leon Van Autreve served during WWII, including 9th Infantry Division invasion of North Africa in 1942. Discharged after the war, he returned to service in 1948. He served in Vietnam (1967-1969) as Sergeant Major of the 20th Engineer Brigade. He is recipient of the rare SoldierÕs Medal, and from 1973 to 1975 served as 4th Sergeant Major of the Army. He retired in 1975 and died on March 14, 2002. He is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
