(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James Raiford Ellis, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Ellis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company A, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Iron Triangle, South Vietnam, in January 1967. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Ellis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
Under the provisions of Executive Order 11545, July 9, 1970, the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America take pleasure in awarding the Defense Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant General James Raiford Ellis, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service contributing to national security and defense, in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, as Defense Representative to Pakistan from 1988 to 1990.
