United States Military Academy Register of Graduates

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Michael Shannon Davison, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Davison distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 12 February 1968, while serving as commanding officer of Company C, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and destroy mission near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force, Captain Davison exposed himself to the hostile fire as he directed his unit’s fire on the insurgent’s emplacements. As Captain Davison led his unit deeper into enemy-controlled terrain, the lead element suddenly became engaged by numerous well-fortified enemy bunkers and sustained several casualties. Again Captain Davison exposed himself to the intense hostile fire as he moved to their aid and maneuvered his men to victory. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
