The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John D. Reese (ASN: 1481842), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 142d Infantry Regiment, 36th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Roche, France, 27 October 1918. Though he was suffering from illness and had been told to go to the rear, Private Reese for three days remained on duty as a runner, and, when almost exhausted, went forward with his company in attack, voluntarily accompanying a liaison patrol on a dangerous mission.
