The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Infantry) James Joseph Schwebach (ASN: 0-5329577/17673387), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Schwebach distinguished himself by valorous actions on 9 October 1969 while serving with Company A, 4th Battalion, 3d Infantry. On that date, the company was attempting to cross a swollen stream near Gia Thug Ha when Captain Schwebach observed one of his men lose his footing and fall into the river. Reacting immediately, Captain Schwebach dove into the water and swam through the raging current approximately 100 meters to the side of his helpless comrade. Despite the extremely adverse conditions, he was quickly able to calm the man and assist him to shore. Twice more, as the soldier attempted to cross the river, he was swept away by the strong current, but each time Captain Schwebach was able to reach the man and bring him to safety. His courageous and timely actions were directly responsible for saving the life of his comrade and served as an inspiration to the remainder of his unit. Captain Schwebach’s personal heroism, unselfish concern for his fellow soldiers, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
