The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Colonel Isaac Swartwood Catlin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 July 1864, while serving with 109th New York Infantry (Railway Brigade), in action at Petersburg, Virginia. In a heroic effort to rally the disorganized troops Colonel Catlin was disabled by a severe wound. While being carried from the field he recovered somewhat and bravely started to return to his command, when he received a second wound, which necessitated amputation of his right leg.
