Department of the Army, General Orders No. 28 (August 12, 1961)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Clarence M. Denn, Jr., United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Headquarters Company, 13th United States Army Field Station, at the Royal Navy Wireless Station, Forest Moor, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England, on 5 November 1960. Sergeant Denn was standing near a group of American spectator’s at a fireworks display when one of the rockets accidentally fired into the group, seriously injuring one of the individuals. Without hesitation or concern for his own personal safety, Sergeant Denn moved quickly, picked up the loose rocket with his bare hands, and threw it into the air where it instantly exploded. During this act, he suffered severe burns to his hand and forearm. His prompt, courageous and unselfish efforts in this sudden emergency undoubtedly prevented further serious injury or possible death to other Americans in the group. Sergeant Denn’s outstanding presence of mind and heroic actions are in the most cherished traditions of the United States Army, and reflect distinct credit on himself and the military service.
