Headquarters, 5th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 48 (May 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Waldemar T. Zimmel (ASN: 36214288), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, on 24 March 1945 in the vicinity of Lefheim, Germany. When an artillery shell hit a gasoline-laden vehicle near his own ammunition transport, Private Zimmel hurried to remove it from danger. The gasoline exploded, stunning him and igniting another ammunition vehicle, setting it aflame and causing frequent explosions. Upon recovering and with complete disregard to his own safety, Private Zimmel braved the danger by driving his transport to safety, saving the ammunition and equipment so vital to battalion operations. This gallant action and devotion to duty reflect high credit upon himself and the armed forces.
