The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clarence C. York (ASN: 34971724), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 March 1945 in Germany. While other members of his company advanced to outflank enemy positions which halted an attack Private York was assigned a rear security mission. As he took up his position two enemy soldiers appeared around the corner of a building with an automatic weapon and a panzerfaust. Private York immediately fired on the enemy with his automatic rifle, killing one and wounding the other. In return an anti-tank grenade fired by the enemy burst only a yard from his face and injured him painfully. He recovered quickly however and drove off this new threat, materially contributing to the uninterrupted attack of his company. The courage, alertness and tenacity of purpose displayed by Private York reflect the highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
