Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 79 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant John R. Wood (ASN: 14130196), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 June 1944 in France. When under a heavy concentration of enemy artillery and mortar fire, Sergeant Wood discovered that several members of his squad were missing, he went in search of them. Though he was repeatedly exposed to grave danger from enemy fire Sergeant Wood courageously sought out each missing member of his squad and directed them to safety. He was just about to rejoin his squad when he fell, mortally wounded. For his unselfish devotion to his own men and his gallantry under fire Sergeant Wood reflects highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
