Headquarters, 83d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 40 (September 15, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harvey L. Williams (ASN: 34547072), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 August 1944, near *****, France. When his squad was pinned down by heavy enemy fire Private First Class Williams moved forward alone and fired on the enemy so effectively that a large number surrendered. The squad was thus enabled to continue its attack. When it was halted a second time by a well placed enemy machine gun, Private First Class Williams again crawled forward alone, killed the officer operating the gun and clearing the way to the objective. The valiant determination and conspicuous personal bravery of this enlisted man reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
