No. 43, W.D., 1918), Major (Infantry) John Henry O’Connor, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Major O’Connor distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Baulny, France, 27 September 1918, in refusing to be evacuated although wounded, and for brilliant leadership under heavy enemy fire. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 9 (August 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Infantry) John Henry O’Connor, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the attack on Montrebeau Woods, France, 28 September 1918. By his personal example, leadership, and courage under most severe fire, Major O’Connor was a source of inspiration to his command and a very great factor in the successful attack.
