The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Raymond P. White (ASN: 39320411), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 26 September 1944 through 28 September 1944, in Germany. Staff Sergeant White, a Squad Leader, was leading a night patrol into enemy territory to obtain information as to enemy troop dispositions and installations. To avoid being discovered, he assumed the responsibility for making the deepest penetration alone, leaving his men to cover him. The patrol returned with valuable information. On another occasion, Staff Sergeant White led a patrol which set up an observation post well in front of friendly lines. His patrol held this post, even when overrun by the enemy, by turning off the radio and concealing themselves. Staff Sergeant White’s leadership, determination, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
