The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) James O. White, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Division during World War II. As forward observer for an armored field artillery battalion, Lieutenant White made his way over a ridge and under heavy enemy fire and direct observation to a point from which he could observe German positions. With complete disregard for his own welfare in the continuing shelling, he brought prompt and accurate artillery fire upon enemy installations. Due to the effective fire directed by Lieutenant Whit, FIFTH Army forces were able to overrun the German positions and kill or capture more than two hundred enemy troops with a minimum of casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
