The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) James L. White (ASN: 0-423413), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 70th Tank Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, in July and August 1943. During an engagement with the enemy, Lieutenant White led a tank attack against a superior enemy tank force and, by his brilliant and fearless tactics, destroyed a number of them. He then returned to our liens, assumed command of an infantry platoon which had lost its leader, and directed a successful attack against the remaining enemy tanks. Lieutenant White’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
