The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Paul W. Wallace (ASN: 0-1016598), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 82d Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2d Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 11 April 12945 in Germany. On that date, an airfield near Magdeburg, Germany, three half-tracks of the 1st Platoon, Company C, 82d Armored Reconnaissance Battalion came under terrific enemy anti-tank and panzerfaust fire. First Lieutenant Wallace ran forward under intense fire and drove one half-track, loaded with ammunition, to cover of nearby buildings. First Lieutenant Wallace again exposed himself to ever increasing enemy fire, and personally brought two wounded men to safety. Many enemy planes were destroyed on the airfield and two defending anti-tank guns. The task force which he was spearheading was unable to come to his aid because of resistance in the town through which he had passed. First Lieutenant Wallace led his men back to the task force, hitting the enemy defense positions from the rear, enabling the task for to reach the Elbe River. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Wallace, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
