The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Harry L. Vowels, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 43d Infantry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. A clerk in the personnel section, Sergeant Vowels volunteered to participate in an attack on a Japanese Motor pool. With total disregard for his own life, he left his sheltered position to assist in the removal of a wounded comrade. In this action he himself was wounded and after he had received medical aid, he again returned to assist a wounded companion. Sergeant Vowels’ courageous actions and devotion to duty beyond his normal line, contributed immeasurably to the successful progress of the operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
