The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Elhert R. Upshaw (ASN: 0-1306685), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 July 1944, in France. Assigned to duty with an infantry force making a determined advance into enemy territory, First Lieutenant Upshaw was painfully wounded. Despite his wounds he remained on duty and continued directing his comrades until the objective was attained. Though subjected to heavy enemy fire, First Lieutenant Upshaw moved from hedgerow to hedgerow totally disregarding his personal safety and brought deadly fire on the enemy. He refused first aid until he was assured that the operation was successful and then permitted himself to be evacuated by members of his group. The heroic self-sacrifice and personal bravery displayed by First Lieutenant Upshaw reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
