The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Oscar G. Turner (ASN: 0-533508), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 104th Infantry Division in the Pacific Theater of Operations on 23 and 24 February 1945. Lieutenant Turner’s platoon was the first to cross a river in an important operation. He moved his men quickly into the enemy-held town, killing four and capturing three enemy soldiers. The following day he led his men across 500 yards of open terrain before being pinned down by enemy machine gun fire. After calling for artillery fire, Lieutenant Turner went forward to neutralize fire which pinned down his scouts. After instructing his scouts, he moved forward again and was killed by enemy machine gun fire. The heroism and great personal bravery displayed by Lieutenant Turner reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
