The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant William R. Trombley (ASN: 36114795), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 April 1945, in Germany. Staff Sergeant Trombley’s unit encountered heavy enemy small arms, machine gun, and rocket fire coming from excellent defensive positions located on a high hill. Quickly surveying the situation, Staff Sergeant Trombley led his squad in a flanking attack on the enemy position. Advancing fearlessly in the face of the heavy fire which was concentrated on his squad, he silenced a machine gun with rifle grenades and then proceeded forward with his men and helped secure the hill. Staff Sergeant Trombley’s quick thinking and gallant action were largely responsible for the success of his platoon’s attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Trombley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
