Headquarters, 85th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 63 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Joseph E. Traglia, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 85th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 September 1944, in Italy. When a litter squad evacuating a wounded man was forced to take cover from an intense artillery barrage, leaving the wounded soldier exposed to the flying shell fragments, Private Traglia volunteered to lead a squad of litter bearers through the continuing barrage to evacuate him. After a lengthy search the squad under the direction of Private Traglia located the man and proceeded to remove him to the aid station. When within 10 yards of the station, a German .88 shell exploding, resulting in the loss of his left leg, a fractured right leg and wounds to his arm and body. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
