Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (May 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Buford Clark Toler (ASN: 0-1291545), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 February 1945, in Germany. When his company became pinned down by intense enemy fire, Captain Toler left his rear position and went through the enemy fire to make a personal reconnaissance of the area. He located an enemy machine gun position and maneuvered his men so skillfully that they soon knocked it out. While leading his men forward to the machine gun position, Captain Toler was mortally wounded. His heroic self-sacrifice at the cost of his life enabled the company to advance and take its objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Toler were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
