By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Max F. Moritz (ASN: 2337855), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, when his platoon on 22 July 1918 had successfully taken a German field piece in the woods north of Mont St. Pere and returned to the town, Sergeant Moritz voluntarily remained behind with a wounded man in the woods infested by enemy snipers until dark when he brought his wounded comrade to a place of safety.
