War Department, General Orders No. 44 (1919)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) James H. S. Morison, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 117th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. After being knocked unconscious into a shell hole, and although suffering acutely from the shock, Lieutenant Morison rejoined his company and continued to care for the wounded in the open and under intense shell fire. His respirator having been blown away by the exploding shell, this mission was rendered much more precarious by enemy gas shells. He remained at his first-aid station through an intense barrage which killed several of the stretcher bearers and helpers at this point, evacuating the wounded with great rapidity until he was severely wounded and forced to be evacuated.
