Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 115 (December 11, 1944), Amended by General Orders No. 11 (January 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Henry A. Snotherly (ASN: 20468782), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 July 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Snotherly, a member of the Cannon Company of an infantry regiment, was captured by the enemy. He was able to escape during the darkness when a fire fight distracted his captors, but before he could regain friendly lines he was again taken prisoner. The following morning a fellow infantryman surprised two of Staff Sergeant Snotherly’s captors and took them prisoner. Taking advantage of the excitement thus caused, Sergeant Snotherly grabbed the machine pistol belonging to this guard, and with the aid of the fellow soldier captured the enemy group, which was deployed along a hedgerow, one by one. Staff Sergeant Snotherly and his companion were thereby able to return to friendly lines with twenty-two enemy prisoners. The courage and aggressive initiative shown by Staff Sergeant Snotherly reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
