The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant} Sylvester Shetter (ASN: 0-1326061), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 August 1944, in Holland. First Lieutenant Shetter was commanding the leading platoon of a column which was pursuing the retreating enemy. When heavy resistance was encountered, First Lieutenant Shetter moved rom squad to squad directing the fire and movement of his platoon, and when he realized that an assault was necessary, he stood up right and, calling for his men to follow, gallantly led them in an attack. Inspired by his courage, his men left their cover and captured three heavy guns, two machine guns, and numerous small arms in the ensuing fight. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Shetter, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
