The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William E. Sherman (ASN: 36352303), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 322d Infantry Regiment, 81st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on Angaur Island, Palau Group, on 22 September 1944. As radio operator for his regimental commander, Sergeant Sherman could not obtain proper transmission from his radio set in his concealed position. In order to obtain maximum transmitting efficiency from his set to insure delivery of essential orders, without regard to his own safety, he climbed to a vantage point which was subjected to enemy fire. While performing his important mission Sergeant Sherman was killed by a sniper’s bullet. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
