    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Stephen Joseph McLean (ASN: 60026), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mouilly, France, 12 September 1918. When the advance of his platoon was belated by heavy machine-gun fire from the front, Private McLean exposed himself to heavy fire, charged and captured the enemy position. Single-handed he forced nine of the enemy to surrender and enabled his platoon to continue the advance.
