The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Claude H. Scott (ASN: 36406910), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Germany. While Staff Sergeant Scott’s company was in a holding position, they were subjected to a severe enemy counterattack and the platoon of which he was a member became pinned to the ground by enemy machine gun, small arms, and tank fire. It was evident that unless immediate action was taken, the enemy would surround them completely. Because there was not available communication, Staff Sergeant Scott crawled to the company command post, subjecting himself to terrific enemy fire, in a heroic effort to obtain help for his platoon. Upon reaching the command post, he secured bazookas and reinforcements which enabled the platoon to repulse the serious counterattack. By his gallant devotion to duty and bravery, Staff Sergeant Scott saved his platoon from certain annihilation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Scott, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
