The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Bernard John McGuirl (ASN: 62960), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 23 October 1918. While leading a squad of ammunition carriers, Corporal McGuirl was severely wounded. After a tourniquet had been applied to his wounds he ordered the second in command to continue with the work, refusing the aid of his comrades until their mission had been completed. While on his way to a hospital Corporal McGuirl died of his wounds.
