Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Harvey Birt Shick, Jr. (ASN: 35896854), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 113th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 October 1944, in Germany. Following an intensive artillery concentration on Corporal Shick’s unit, the enemy launched a counterattack supported by tanks. Without hesitation, Corporal Shick advanced from the safety of his position across an open field in an attempt to establish an observation post that would make it possible to deliver artillery fire on the enemy. A German tank observed the advance and fired a shell that instantly killed Corporal Shick, but the courageous example he had displayed inspired his comrades to continue on and successfully complete their mission. Corporal Shick’s outstanding courage and unswerving devotion to duty are a credit to his memory and to the record of his unit. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Shick, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
