The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant George Sanders (ASN: 14006444), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 14 October 1943. When all supporting riflemen had been scattered by the intensity of the German fire during an engagement in Italy, Sergeant Sanders, Infantry machine gun platoon leader, kept his guns firing at the enemy. Then, leaving his second in command temporarily in charge of the platoon, he crawled and ran 300 yards, with machine gun bullets coming within inches of him and mortar shells exploding from 10 to 20 feet away, to contact a small British force on his left flank. Finding the strength of the British force reduced to one officer and five men, he returned to his position under fire, organized a 10-man rifle squad from his platoon, and led them to the British unit to strengthen their position and protect his flank. As a result his platoon held its sector firmly until orders came to withdraw from the area in order to lay down a heavy friendly artillery concentration. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
