The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edwin Rufenacht (ASN: 0-1317945), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 27 December 1944 to 28 December 1944, in Belgium. Despite heavy enemy mortar, artillery, and rocket fire which was directed against his position and the discomfort of extreme cold, First Lieutenant Rufenacht remained steadfastly at his post and directed artillery fire against the enemy. His gallant actions were responsible for the destruction of three enemy mortar positions and an anti-tank gun. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Rufenacht, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
