The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Louis Mazkwaz (ASN: 107707), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 5th Machine-Gun Battalion, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Medeah Ferme, France, 4 October 1918. Corporal Mazkwaz left the shelter of his trench to rescue soldiers who had been buried by explosion of a shell. Shortly after, while conducting his men to cover, a shell exploded near by, severely wounding a member of his squad. Directing the remainder of the squad to take cover, he went to the assistance of the wounded man and, while rendering first aid, was mortally wounded.
