The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Melvin L. Riesch (ASN: 0-1324578), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Riesch was assigned to duty as Commanding Officer of an infantry rifle company. The impetus of the attack of his company had been halted by enemy emplacements. First Lieutenant Riesch was ordered to send out a patrol in order to gain information as to enemy dispositions. Realizing the importance of the mission, First Lieutenant Riesch himself went forward and infiltrated behind the enemy lines in order to locate and later dispose of the enemy gun emplacements. As a result of this hazardous undertaking, information was obtained which made possible a successful tactical operation with a minimum of casualties suffered. The personal courage and determination exhibited by First Lieutenant Riesch reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
