The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Joe W. Reynolds, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 November 1944 in France. When on attack his battalion was disorganized due to intense small arms, mortar and artillery fire, Captain Reynolds, who had just assumed the duties of Battalion S-3, assisted in the reorganization of the companies. In resuming the attack, Captain Reynolds personally led the battalion forward. Again meeting strong resistance, Captain Reynolds realized that aggressive action was necessary and quickly secured two friendly tanks from a nearby area and coordinated their attack with the infantry. He then led the battalion to its objective and, having once again reorganized the companies, he advanced to a position from which he directed artillery fire on the enemy. The great courage and superior leadership displayed by Captain Reynolds reflects the highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
