The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Major (Field Artillery) Norman D. MacLeod, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 103d Field Artillery, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Marcheville, France, 26 September 1918. While acting as artillery liaison officer Major MacLeod displayed remarkable courage and judgment under terrific artillery and machine-gun fire. In addition to his duties as liaison officer he volunteered and took personal command of a detachment of infantrymen who were without officers, and by his personal bravery and resourcefulness successfully withstood a violent counterattack by the enemy.
