The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles Lewis (ASN: 2388698), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company M, 61st Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-de-Rappes, France, 12 October 1918, and near Cunel, France, 13 October 1918. Sergeant Lewis assisted, on 12 October in carrying his company commander, who had been severely wounded, to a first-aid station, under heavy shell fire. On 13 October near Cunel, he took charge of his company and had successfully reached the objective and held it until he was killed by shell fire.
