Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 100 (November 14, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James Boyd McCain (ASN: 34433062), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1944, in Germany. Private First Class McCain was serving as a driver with a field artillery battalion. During a fierce engagement with the enemy it was necessary for the artillery forward observer party to move forward to an exposed position along roads under enemy observation and over areas not yet cleared of mines. Private First Class McCain unhesitatingly volunteered to enter this area with his vehicle and lost his life in the attempt when his vehicle struck a mine and he was instantly killed. His fearlessness and gallantry were a source of great inspiration to his comrades at a time when the situation was most critical. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class McCain, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
