The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Alva Kane (ASN: 2177538), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 353d Infantry Regiment (Attached), 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bantheville Woods, France, October 25 – 27, 1918. After two medical officers, attached to the battalion with which he was serving, had been gassed and evacuated he took over and operated the first-aid station, remaining heroically at his post, though subjected to heavy shell fire. He remained continuously on duty until blinded by mustard gas.
