The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Lee Jones (ASN: 2425997), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Cierges, France, 4 October 1918. Learning that his company commander was wounded in making a reconnaissance, Private Jones, with utter disregard for his own personal danger, crawled about 100 yards in advance of the front line under intense machine-gun and rifle fire, succeeded in reaching the wounded officer, and moved him back within the front line. About an hour later Private Jones, although wounded, carried the officer about a mile to the first-aid station in Cierges.
